Elizabethan era (1558-1603)

The era of the first fathingdale chair. 

The farthingale chair is an armless chair with a wide seat. They were made to accommodate the wide hooped farthingale dresses of the 16th century. The back rest is an upholstered, fixed panel and the seat was also cushioned and fixed. 

The farthingale chair was one of the earliest comfortable upholstered seats and was used in many parts of Europe and the United States. Towards the late Tudor period, stitched edging entered the fray. This was a revolutionary concept at the time and the beginning of carpenters making various frame shapes. The stitching allowed any frame to be padded
